Mothersday 2022 / What to give for Mother's Day?

When is Mother's Day 2022 in Germany?

In principle, Mother's Day always falls on a Sunday. This year, Mother's Day is on Sunday, 8 May 2022. Traditionally, the day in honour of mothers always takes place on the second Sunday in May.

Since when has Mother's Day been celebrated?

There are many different assumptions about the origin of Mother's Day: Some believe that it finds its origin in the Nazi era and others are convinced that it is the invention of the advertising industry or the florists. But this is not so: Mother's Day goes back to an initiative of the American women's rights activist Anna Jarvis. To honour her mother, who died in 1905, and to draw attention to women's problems, she called for a day of celebration for all mothers. In 1914, US President Woodrow Wilson declared the second Sunday in May as Mother's Day nationwide.

In 1923, Mother's Day was also celebrated in Germany for the first time. During National Socialism, the celebration of Mother's Day was linked to Nazi ideology and propaganda goals. Especially mothers with many children were celebrated as heroines of the people.

Ideas for Mother's Day despite the Corona pandemic: What can you do on this day?

For many people, stopping by for coffee and cake with a bouquet of flowers is a matter of course on Mother's Day. However, it is clear that this year's Mother's Day will be different than usual due to the Corona crisis. But that's no reason to bury your head in the sand. We have a few ideas on how you can sweeten Mother's Day for your mother despite the Corona rules in force.

1. give your mother something unique from a cuckoo moment... She will enjoy our beautiful jewellery, key rings or elegant glass coasters for a long time. And she will always be reminded of what lovely children she has.

2. given the occasion and thanks to the Corona pandemic, Mother's Day is sadly lacking in excursion variety. The tip to take a walk in the park may seem rather uncreative. But be honest, when was the last time you took a walk with your mother? Can't remember? Then grab your mum and get out into the fresh air!

Photos are for the moment, memories are for eternity. If you want to spend an extraordinary Mother's Day despite limited opportunities, take a bike ride with your mother and explore a new part of town.

If you cannot visit your mother on Mother's Day, you have the possibility to spend the day together at a distance via video chat. You can have breakfast together or play board games online.

No matter which option you choose, in the end, all that matters on Mother's Day is that we spend time with our mum.

Which countries celebrate Mother's Day?

There is a day of honour just for mothers almost everywhere. However, the traditions and dates differ. In France, for example, Mother's Day is not celebrated on the second Sunday in May as it is in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and the USA, but on the last Sunday of the month. This means that this year, Mother's Day in France will not be celebrated until 29 May 2022. French people like to present their mothers with a cake in the shape of flowers on this day.

In Spain, on the other hand, Mother's Day falls on the first Sunday in May, i.e. on 1 May 2022, and as "Dia de la madre" is also a day in honour of the Mother of God.

In Japan, too, Mother's Day always falls on the second Sunday in May, although it is customary there for children to present their mothers with red carnations.

Every country has its own custom to honour mothers on a day and to give their attention. But in the end, all traditions express the same thing: Thank you, mum!
